Hand Luggage Rules Still Trip Up Travellers as Airlines Set Their Own Limits

Hand Luggage Rules Still Trip Up Travellers as Airlines Set Their Own Limits

If you fly for work, the size of your carry on bag can change a lot depending on which airline you book. New research says some airlines let you bring up to 67% more hand luggage space than others, and this gap is catching out business travellers who think the rules are the same everywhere.

The study comes from Good Business Travel. It found that more people now want to travel light and skip checked bags. Searches for "one bag travel" have gone up a lot, as travellers try to dodge extra fees and move through airports faster.

But cabin bag rules are not standard across carriers. If your bag is too big, you could face a charge of up to £75 at the gate. For business travellers who rely on just one bag, this matters even more, since that bag often has to fit a laptop, chargers, and clothes for an overnight stay.

What this means for you

This site exists to explain travel and money news in plain terms, for people who are busy but want to know what is going on. You should not need a dictionary to understand your own flight rules, so here is what the research suggests you do before you fly.

  1. Check your airline's exact hand luggage size and weight limits before you pack, since they are not the same across carriers.
  2. Pick clothes that mix and match, instead of packing a full separate outfit for each day.
  3. Lay out everything you plan to bring, then remove a portion of it. You likely packed more than you need.
  4. Use empty space well. Stuff socks, cables, and small items inside your shoes.
  5. Use packing cubes or similar compression tools to squeeze more into less space.

There is one more thing worth knowing. EU lawmakers have approved a rule giving passengers a free cabin bag starting in October 2027. But it is still unclear if or how this will apply to travellers flying from the UK, so do not count on it changing your packing habits anytime soon.

For companies that manage travel budgets, a quick look at which airlines offer better baggage allowances could save staff from surprise fees at the airport.

Your next step is simple. Before your next trip, check your airline's current website or booking confirmation for the exact bag dimensions allowed, so you are not caught out at check in.
